From Coding to Creativity: Integrating Design Thinking into IT and Technology Education
Abstract
Read abstract
This study examines how the integration of Design Thinking into Information Technology (IT) and technology education can bridge technical programming skills and creative, human-centered problem-solving. Specifically, it explores how the five stages of Design Thinking empathizing, defining, ideating, prototyping, and testing shape students’ creative thinking, active engagement, and collaborative learning experiences. A qualitative research approach was employed, involving teachers, students, and school principals as key informants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and documentation of learning activities, then analyzed thematically to identify recurring patterns in teaching practices and student experiences. The findings indicate that Design Thinking creates opportunities for students to move beyond coding procedures toward developing digital solutions that respond to real users’ needs. Through collaborative ideation, iterative prototyping, and feedback-based testing, students demonstrate greater involvement in learning, explore alternative solutions, and communicate their ideas more actively. The approach also provides opportunities to develop empathy, creativity, collaboration, and a willingness to experiment with and revise initial designs. Meanwhile, teachers assume a facilitative role by guiding inquiry, supporting experimentation, and connecting technical knowledge with authentic problems. This study highlights the pedagogical value of integrating Design Thinking into technology education as a framework for connecting computational competencies with human-centered innovation. Its implications emphasize the importance of designing learning activities that balance technical proficiency, creative exploration, and meaningful student participation.
